Welcome to Nieuwoudtville - Nieuwoudtville Olive Camping and Caravan Site

The Camping and Caravan site is on the edge of town, private and on a large site.

Nieuwoudtville is a hamlet on the Bokkeveld Plateau. It is famous for it's magnificent floral display from July through to October - our spring. Annually it is visited by tourists and botanists from all over the world

The town and surrounds are known for their hospitality, the absence of pollution, starlit nights, vast vistas and fine lamb. Much of what you will see around Nieuwoudtville is what it must have looked like thousands of years ago.

Welcome to Nieuwoudtville

Bokkeveld, Boesmanland, Hantam, Knersvlakte: these fascinating South African regions converge at Nieuwoudtville, a hamlet on the Bokkeveld Mountain Plateau. It is a botanical marvel with the highest speciation of bulbs in the world and the most beautiful landscapes. Flowers appear from late March to October, peaking in August and September.

Activities and sights in and around Nieuwoudtville include bird watching, caravanning, hiking trails in the Oorlogskloof Nature Reserve. The historical church, cycling trails, rooibos tea production, wheat and sheep farming, wild flower reserve, historical wheat mills, the Olifants River Valley and its wine routes, star gazing, historical ruins, Rock Art, waterfalls, windmill museum at Loeriesfontein, an Aloe forest, hang- & paragliding, the Calvinia museum, glacial pavements, a Clivia Nursery, the Van Rhynsdorp Succulent Nursery, Van Rhynsdorp museum, numerous historical sites and Boesmanland and the Bo-Karoo, South Africa's greatest undiscovered secret.

We refer to Nieuwoudtville as the BULB CAPITAL OF THE WORLD, since it has the highest speciation of bulbs in the world. South Africa's greatest contribution to world horticulture has been bulbs such as Freesia, Ixia, Tritonia, Gladiolus, Babiana, Sparaxis, Dierama, Clivia and many others. Not only do many species of these bulbs occur at Nieuwoudtville, but there are also a number of these bulbs that are endemic to Nieuwoudtville and the Bokkeveld Plateau.

The Greatest Flower Spectacle
Brunsvigia Bosmaniae is without a doubt one of the world's greatest floral spectacles. Unfortunately this mass flowering is extremely difficult to predict and does not necessarily occur every year. The trigger for flowering is a downpour of not less than 15mm in February or March. Almost to the day, hour and minute, 3 weeks after a downpour, the flowers will be fully open.

The reason for this unpredictability lies in the fact that although Nieuwoudtville has a Mediterranean climate (dry summers and wet winters) the triggering factor for flowering is a late summer spill-over of rain from the neighbouring summer system, which does not occur every year.

Once it has rained, the Brunsvigia bosmaniae flower season can be predicted. If you are interested in seeing this spectacle, please provide me with your e-mail address and I will notify you.
